Woody's dog blog

WoodyHi, I’m Woody and I love spending time in the woods. There are so many exciting things to do like running around, fetching sticks, and getting muddy! My favourite woodland activities are stick chewing and eating crab apples…they’re delicious!

The great thing about being a forester’s assistant is that I get to spend lots of time walking in the woods which is great fun and keeps my owner fit and trim too!

In fact I enjoy it so much I wanted to tell you all about my adventures…maybe if you bark loud enough your owners will take you on a forest scramble.

I’m Back! Sorry it has been so long since my last update, but guess what! They have built the first ever dog activity trail in Coatham Wood, near Long Newton on Teeside and it is amazing!

Holly and me have just got back today and I am exhausted. It is huge and there is so much to do. I hope they build more around the country as it was so much fun, even more so when we got to watch the humans trying to keep up with us as we shuffled through pipes and tunnels, jumped over hurdles and bounced along the balancing beams. Some of it was quite a challenge but I don’t think I have ever felt this good, and the humans look like they are enjoying it too. It helps to keep us all fit and healthy.

Holly really enjoyed it; she is feeling a lot better now after her operation. I still have to be careful not too get too excited when we are bouncing around, but most of my energy is used up by the dog activity trail.

I will keep you up to date with all the new and fun things to do in the forests, but I am off for a nap now, I am so tired after all the fun I have had over the last few months.

Remember you too can enjoy a day out on the activity trail, so get barking at the humans and soon you will be bouncing through tyres, running up steps and enjoying a fun day out!

Bye for now!

Holly wishing she could go wild in the snow.Crikey, sorry about the long gap…..things have all gone a bit astray here. Holly has been unwell after needing to have an operation on her back.

She hurt herself when we were out for a walk and she’s only just getting back to normal. We’ve been going for walks separately as I tend to get a bit excited and forget that I can’t bounce about with her. It does mean however that I always get the frisbee…..

Seems like a long time ago but the day we spent at the Forest of Dean was great. As promised, the journey was worth it as there was so much to do. We both tried lots of things (don’t tell the humans, but there seemed to be loads of treats if you did…..yum!).
I chickened out of the dancing though…….my owner only knows some strange 60’s moves and I had friends watching!

There were loads of other dogs who were all really friendly. One particular one was called Jake and he was looking for some new humans to look after. Luckily he found some really nice ones who wanted him to go home with them so I hope they are all having fun together.

What about the snow at Easter? I had great fun. It wasn’t as good as it should have been though as Holly still can’t be let off her lead. Here’s a picture of her waiting in the garden for me to come back home.

We’re going to go to Kielder Forest soon which should be great as I’ve heard that it’s absolutely huge and there are no excuses for not finding a stick. I’ll let you know how we get on in my next update and will also keep you posted on Holly’s recovery.

See you soon!

Rendlesham Forest

Thursday 30th August

Me showing Steve all the sticks I've collected!I’ve stayed close to home over the summer – the rain has washed away my wandering instinct.

So I thought I would tell you about Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk which is one of my favourite places for a walk. There are several walking trails through the conifer forest that is located in Suffolk's coastal heathland belt known as the Sandlings.

The Phoenix Trail was named to commemorate the great storm of 1987 –20 years ago this October. I’m too young to remember it but my owner Steve tells me it really was devastating.

There are two circular walks, the Blue easy access trail of 1.2km/0.75 miles and the Red longer trail of 5km/3miles. Each allows you to see the unique flora and fauna of the forest. The longer trail will take you through plantations, heathland and wetlands.

I always look out for spooky sights and sniff around for unusual objects on the UFO trail but I’ve never unearthed anything unearthly! The 5km/3mile walk takes you to some of the areas connected to the UFO sighting in December 1980.

Well, I hope the weather gets better next month – we’re off to Dogs at the Lodge in the Forest of Dean on Sunday 9 September. This fun day out features a range of exciting activities including a Doggy Treasure Trail, Cani-cross - where you get a chance to take your human for a proper run, Dog Agility and even dancing with your human! I can’t wait to try everything out…well, nearly everything –I’m not sure about the dancing – I’ve got four left feet!

Haldon Forest Park

Friday 15th June, 2007

View of one of the trails at Haldon Forest Park, Peninsula FDHello everyone. Woody here! Sorry its been such a long time since I last told you about my forest adventures but I’ve had such a good times outside in the woods that I almost forgot to tell you about it!

As well as visiting my regular haunts in East England we went all the way to Devon over the May Bank Holiday Weekend and visited the brilliant Haldon Forest Park. My owners were impressed by the Canine Corner notice board with news and information for dog walkers…not much fun if you can’t read though.

We walked along the Butterfly Trail and checked out the amazing views across the forest and over the Teign Valley. Although the walk was only three miles long we took it slowly as there were lots of pretty butterflies and birds for my owners to look at.

I’m trying to convince my owners to take Holly and me back to Haldon for the Top Dog Day Out on 2 September. Maybe we’ll bump into some of the friends we made on our last visit! There will be loads of fun things to try out including cani-cross – which is a chance to give your human a walkout by pulling them round the forest at top speed - and dog agility. I better start practising my fetching and honing my barking skills for the Canine Competition now. One things for sure…I know I’m a brainier mutt than Holly!

P.S. My blog has been attracting lots of attention in the doggy world. I’ve heard from pooches all around the globe, many of them envious of the lovely walks we have here in England. I recently heard from a Miniature Schnauzer called Schnu who lives in New York. She said that, “Even though I have a fantastic view of New York City there is not much sniffing to be done here, I would much rather be there in the woods with you. My mummy and daddy take me for walks along the board walk and sometimes, at night, I see rabbits that I would love to chase but I’m not allowed.”

Alice Holt

Sunday 8th April, 2007

Holly asleep after a tiring day at Alice HoltAt last the sun has come out and today is a beautiful warm day. My owners woke me up this morning and told me that we were heading off in the car to Alice Holt Woodland Park in Surrey! Now the sun is shining they are keen to go off and explore. (I don’t mind the cold but when we go for winter walks all they do is grumble about being frozen!).

So we all piled into the car and drove down to Surrey. I got a bit bored in the car and I couldn’t wait to get out and run around.

I wasn’t disappointed when we got to Alice Holt - there was a lot to see and do and sniff at Alice Holt and loads of families enjoying the sun. We chose the 2.5-mile Lodge Pond Trail that takes you right into the heart of the forest.

As it was Easter Sunday I kept rooting around in the undergrowth looking for Easter eggs but I didn’t find a single one… which made me pretty sad… but I didn’t stay that way for long when I saw the Lodge Pond in front of me!

Holly and I couldn’t wait to jump in and splash about. It was such a nice big pond and we were ready to cool off after our walk. We swam in the pond for ages and then had another run around to dry off. We were pretty tired when we got back in the car and both slept all the way home!

We all had such a great day and my owners have promised us another woodland visit for May Day. I wonder where we will go next?

Thetford Forest

24th February, 2007

SCOTS PINES. THETFORD FP. EAST ANGLIA FDWent to Thetford Forest Park with my owners and my sister Holly today for a special birthday treat. At last the days are getting longer and warmer so now is the perfect time to get out and experience the joys of spring.

It is my ninth birthday next week so I was allowed to choose where we walked. I followed my nose and went for the Yellow Walk. The trail goes deep into the heart of the forest and is perfect place to take the owners for a walk. Its three miles long and takes about two hours – long enough for a really good run around but short enough that the humans don’t start moaning about being tired!

I had such a great day…I hope my next forest adventure will be further away from home. There are so many exciting different places to sniff around…I can’t wait to get out and explore.
