Care and maintenance of our collection

Preparing to ClimbLooking after our trees and landscape is a vitally important task for the Forestry Commission to ensure that we maintain and enhance our significant and important collection.

Westonbirt has a dedicated 'Tree Team' who undertake this essential role. The team consists of a dedicated database manager who maintains our GIS (mapping) system and tree records, specialist arboriculturalists who work on the trees and a propagator responsible for adding to the collection and raising new specimens.

Perhaps the greatest long-term challenge facing managers at Westonbirt is that of global climate change. In order for the collection to survive and retain its unique qualities, it must adapt to changing climate in a number of ways. For more information about the steps being taken to try and ensure this happens, refer to the ‘responding to climate change’ section.

The large STIHL encyclopaedia of trees
STIHL has built up two large databases of woody plants for your use. They contain (almost) everything you need to know about trees, their typical features, common diseases and many other facts. The databases are constantly being enlarged and updated: it is therefore worthwhile to drop in and surf around frequently.
