Outreach Programmes for 2010 and 2011

Outreach sessions will be run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from mid January to early March.  All of our programmes are designed for us to be able to bring a piece of the arboretum to your school, enabling the children to engage with some small trees, or work with sustainable materials sourced from trees.

Our outreach programmes cost £300 per day which includes an assembly and up to 6 workshop sessions.  We can offer outreach to schools that are no more than an hours drive away from Westonbirt Arboretum.

Assemblies

Aren’t trees brilliant!

We think trees are brilliant!  Meet “Bertie” the tree who will help us learn about all the wonderful things that we get from trees.  A visually interactive assembly with lots of props to bring to life the connections between trees and ourselves.

Bio-diversity challenge

Our world supports such a rich and amazing variety of plant and animal life. This assembly will help provide your school with a starting point for discussing why it is important to help conserve bio-diversity.  The majority of the assembly will be run as a quiz challenge exploring the diversity of life, amazing plants and animals, what is happening to bio-diversity, and what can we do to help.

Workshops

A variety of themed workshops are available, all with hands-on activities and challenges:

  • Aren’t trees brilliant! - explores the need for sustainability and what we can do to help
  • Bio-diversity challenge – explores the need for conservation and what we can do to help
  • Winter trees – explores seasonal changes and how trees are adapted to survive the winter
  • Willow workshop – uses buff willow as a sustainable material to create a selection of crafts
