Volunteering
If you want to get some fresh air and make a difference in your local forest, the Forestry Commission offers a number of opportunities to lend a hand with a variety of projects and events.
At Chopwell Woodland Park, local community group the ‘Friends of Chopwell Wood’ run regular conservation days where you are invited to come along, learn some new skills, meet new friends and get some gentle exercise while doing your bit for the wood. Recent tasks have included willow weaving, coppicing, bulb planting and charcoal making. Alternatively, willing hands are always welcome to help at major events such as the Forest Festival and Christmas Tree Sales. For further details, contact Liz Searle on 01207 542495. If mountain biking is your ‘thing’, then there are groups busy trailbuilding at three Northeast forests. In Hamsterley Forest, the ‘Trailblazers’ organise both trail-building days and social events, while at Kielder Castle, the ‘Kielder Reavers’ are in the midst of helping complete a skills loop and Kielder’s first purpose built single track mountain bike trail. Not to be left out, at Chopwell Wood the ‘Northeast FreeRide Association’ are nearing the completion of their very own red grade single track trail.
