The forest is a valuable educational resource for students of all ages, providing the inspiration for a wide variety of projects fulfilling the needs of the National Curriculum. The Forestry Commission’s recreation staff are available to provide structured activity sessions for both Key Stage One and Two. Alternatively, the forest can be used by teachers undertaking self-led visits. A number of activity worksheets to help you investigate the forest environment are available here to download. 'Minibeast' studiesWhether it is looking for creepy crawlies in dead wood, butterflies in flower filled glades or flying bugs in the tree canopy, woodlands provide the ideal habitat for kids to go minibeast hunting! Using basic equipment such as bug boxes, magnifying glasses and trays, a whole minature world full of wonderful creatures awaits. The following worksheets can be used to supplement a minibeast session. 'Minibeast key game' can be used with KS2 pupils for practice when using keys. 'Seed Search' and 'Tree-mendous Quiz' ask children to look closely at different tree species and identify different seeds and leaf shapes. 'Word Challenge' worksheets provide follow-up exercise where facts and key words learned on their trip to the forest can be reinforced and stimulate further discussion. Finally, 'Clinometer worksheet' can be used as part of an exercise to measure the height and estimate the age of trees in the forest.
