Ennerdale webcam
In partnership with BBC Cumbria and Ennerdale Youth Hostel the webcam provides a daily update from the Ennerdale Valley. The webcam is located inside the Ennerdale Youth Hostel at Gillerthwaite about 3.5 miles up the valley from Bowness Knott. The camera shows the view from the common room looking up the valley with Pillar and Pillar rock in the background. The image is currently updated every 2 hours from 8am until 4 pm
The webcam is powered by the hostel's own hydroelectric scheme making it one of the most energy efficient webcams in the country. Installed in 2003 the hydro scheme provides all the electricity for the hostel for virtually the whole year. In 2003 the diesel generator was only needed for a couple of days in the summer. The webcam is probably one of the most remote webcams in England being around 18km from the nearest exchange with the image travelling underwater along the bottom of Ennerdale Water for 4km, Needless to say broadband is not available in the valley and Internet speeds are typically less than 30kbs
