Rights and Regulations

The Forestry Commission is responsible for the ensuring that all woodland work proposals meet legal and statutory regulations at National, European Union (EU) and International levels. Use the left-hand links to find out about the standards, regulations and legislation to which the Forestry Commission must abide.

Complaints and Appeals
Unfortunately we recognise that there may be times when you are not happy with a decision or service we have given. Here you can find out how we handle complaints and appeals, both complaints relating to our Better Woodlands for Wales (BWW) scheme and other matters.

Acts, Regulations and Statutory Instruments (SIs)
Follow this link to find a comprehensive listing of all the relevant legislation and how we must apply it.

EU Directives
Many of the Regulations that govern the work of the Forestry Commission are brought into UK legislation through EU Directives e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment & European Protected Species Regulations.  Rural Development Plans also set out how Rural Development Regulations will be applied.

UK Forestry Standard
This document sets out criteria and standards for the sustainable management of all forests and woodlands in the UK. It is the standard that is applied to ALL grant schemes available from the Forestry Commission.  The UK Forestry Standard was first published in 1998, since then a reprint with some updating has become necessary – this is now available as the Second Edition. You can download a free copy from www.forestry.gov.uk/publications

Environmental Impact Assessment
We may have to assess the work you propose under these Regulations.  Here you can find out about the process and how it might affect you.

Citizen's Charter and Codes of Practice
Find out more about our Citizen's Charter, which sets out our commitments to deliver an efficient and timely service to you.  You may also wish to see our Codes of Practice for Management Planners and Specialist Assessors.
