Wildlife in central Scotland's woodlands and forests
Take a wander through the woods and forests in central Scotland and you might be surprised by the variety of wildlife you could see. And it’s not just animals: grasslands, ponds, rivers, bogs and more make up beautiful and interesting wild places to visit. Animals
Red squirrel, pine marten, roe and red deer, brown hare, badger, water vole and fox all live in the woodlands of this part of the country - but of course some of them are harder to spot than others! InsectsDragonflies and butterflies are just two of the types of insect you can see. You’ll have a better chance of spotting creatures like butterflies on a woodland wander in summer. Pick a sheltered, sunny, open spot in the woodland and sit back and wait. You could see: dark green fritillary, common blue, small heath, peacock, small tortoiseshell, orange-tip and a host of others. Birds
The range of birds that live in the woodlands is amazing. Owls, wrens, thrushes, tits, woodpeckers and birds of prey are just a few of the many types you might see. Spring is a great time to take a walk and enjoy the birdsong that will accompany you along the way. Pond lifeLurking in the ponds, marshes and burns are amphibians such as common toads, frogs, and newts. In this part of Scotland we are lucky to have the great-crested newt, a stunning little animal not found in many other parts of the country. If you spot some wildlife whilst out on your wander in one of Forestry Commission Scotland's woodlands, we'd love to know what you saw. Drop us an email at fescotlow@forestry.gsi.gov.uk and tell us: - where you saw it (name of woodland and grid reference if possible);
- what you saw; and
- how many you saw.
