Carriage Driving

What's happening at the moment

  • We have prepared a Code of Conduct for Carriage Drivers in Welsh Assembly woodlands in association with The British Driving Society in Wales.

  • We also have a form for reporting any problems you encounter whilst out driving in the Assembly-owned woodlands. Full instructions are on the form.

  • Find out about obtaining permission for a carriage driving event in the Assembly-owned woodlands.

  • There are currently two locations where you can turn up and drive without a permit in Wales - designated and waymarked routes in Dyfnant near Welshpool, and the Crychan trails near Llandovery. The Crychan trails are not waymarked with specific carriage driving routes, but there is an open access policy for carriage drivers (restricted to forest roads) at this location - anyone driving in this forest should use the marker numbers purely as a directional indication relating to the map reference.

  • Permits are required for carriage driving in all our forests apart from the designated and waymarked routes in Dyfnant and the forest roads incorporated in the Crychan trails,  and also where you have a legal entitlement to do so already on a BOAT (Byway open to all traffic) or a Restricted Byway (formally Road used as a public footpath {RUPP}). Please contact the relevant Local Area Manager regarding the issue of permits.
Please check before you visit that the area you want to come to is not closed, due to work in progress or an event taking place, by logging on to the CCW Website for current and future closures as determined by the CRoW 2000 Act. Where ever possible, Forestry Commission Wales aims to organise operations to minimise the disruption to Public Rights of Way, and will only make a formal closure/diversion application, when a CRoW closure is in operation, if there is a Health & Safety risk. If you are unsure as to whether a right of way is closed, please contact you local government authority highways department before visiting. On site signage will also tell you whether rights of way are open or closed.
