Purpose
Woodland Improvement Grant (WIG) funds capital investment in woodlands, over an agreed period to create, enhance and sustain an increase in the quantity and quality of public benefits delivered.
Types of WIG fund:
- Woodland Biodiversity Action Plan (including a specific measure for Red squirrels)
- Woodland Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) Condition Improvement
- Woodland Public Access
- Removal and disposal of Chalara infected ash (available to applicants with land grant aided by EWGS)
Regionally specific grants that have been developed to meet priorities identified in the Regional Forestry Frameworks.

In addition to EWGS, there are other funding sources:
- Environmental Stewardship (managed by Natural England) provides grants for environmental management, including woodland. For further guidance, please see
Funding for Farm Woodlands in England (183kb). - Funding for aspects of economic and social investment for forestry purposes (e.g. machinery) is available via Defra http://rdpenetwork.defra.gov.uk/funding-sources
There are a variety of other funding sources available for woodland creation and management. The Royal Forestry Society has produced a guide called Grants for Trees that lists over 50 funding sources.
