Previous activity to help develop the Scottish hardwood timber market

The Scottish Hardwood Timber Market Development Group (SHTMDG) was run by Forestry Commission Scotland  from September 1996 until March 2003 with the aim of identifying, encouraging and facilitating the development of markets for timber from broadleaved woodlands in Scotland.

The Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers (ASHS)

The Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers (ASHS) was established in 2000, through the efforts of the SHTMDG, to enable the sector to deliver joint marketing initiatives and to assist the development of individual businesses.

The Scottish Hardwood Survey

A survey carried out by the SHTMDG in 2003 looked at the overall health, viability and immediate development potential of the sector and found that, between 1996 and 2003:

  • The number of businesses that supplied Scottish hardwoods and hardwood products had increased by 50%;
  • Over half the businesses had experienced an increase in both turnover and profitability over this period;
  • There had been a net increase in 9.5 jobs in this sector and there were plans for involvement, expansion of processing and the labour force.

Scottish Hardwood Survey - 2004 follow-up

In late 2004, a follow-up to the 2003 survey assessed whether forecasts given in the previous survey were realised.  It also identified whether hardwood businesses had continued to develop, looked at how they perceived their prospects and tried to predict hurdles and possible means to overcome them.
