Strategic Search Areas
Following extensive consultation, the Assembly has proposed seven areas in Wales, called Strategic Search Areas (SSAs), showing developers and planning authorities where it considers there being sufficient suitable land to deliver its onshore wind energy targets. Strategic Search Area A Clocaenog Forest Strategic Search Area B Carno North Strategic Search Area C Newtown South Strategic Search Area D Nant y Moch Strategic Search Area E Pontardawe Strategic Search Area F Coed Morgannwg Strategic Search Area G Brechfa Forest Companies will be invited to tender for the sole right to build wind farms within each search area on Assembly land managed by FCW, though they will still need to get planning permission for any such development. For more information about this process please see the National Forest Estate Wind Farm Programme page. The Strategic Search Areas were carefully scrutinised and views were taken on their suitability during a consultation period prior to TAN 8 being finalised. They were also subjected to a visual analysis from national trails and important areas such as national parks.
