What is Cydcoed?

Cydcoed is a £16 million grant programme which gives
100% funding and support for community groups in the Objective One area of West Wales, North Wales and the South Wales Valleys to use woods for community development.

Cydcoed helps the people of Wales make the best possible use of woodland for jobs, economic growth, conservation and recreation - making trees and woods a valuable part of community life.

Cydcoed funds community groups who want to plant new woods or improve woods already nearby. Grant money is used for activities like improving the condition of woods;  opening up woods with new paths, signs and benches; artwork in and about woods; buying land; tree planting; and developing forest facilities that provide local benefits such as forest schools, woodland based businesses, or recreation facilities.

Our overall aim is to promote Welsh forestry in a way that allows it to deliver community development. The outcomes we are trying to achieve are:
Woods that provide long-term local social, environmental and economic benefits.
High capacity community groups able to take part in decision making about their locality.

Our formal programme targets are:
Local participation in 311 woods covering 4831 hectares
New management practices that provide long-term local benefits in 311 woods covering 4808 hectares
37 new community woods covering 316 hectares
5 woodland and timber related businesses supported
127 woodland and timber related jobs safeguarded
40 jobs created

These are the targets for Cydcoed Phase 1 and Phase 2 combined.
