Administrative officer (pay band 6a or 6b)
Who can apply?
You will need at least five passes at GCSE or five SCE Standard Grades. One subject must be in English Language or English. There are no age limits though regular and effective service is expected for a reasonable period before reaching a retirement age between 60 and 65. What is the work like? The Administrative Officer grade is the main clerical grade in the Forestry Commission. Duties typically include handling incoming letters and writing or drafting replies; giving advice and assistance to the public either by telephone or in person; calculating forestry grants; checking accounts; and keeping statistics and records (often by computer). In the Forest Districts and Conservancies/Regions you would provide clerical support to forest officer staff and undertake various roles directly related to forest operations or to private forestry. Promotion is to Executive Officer. Where can I find out more?
Vacancies are advertised in the local press and in Job Centres. Young people can ask at their local careers service. We have a list of our current vacancies on our website, which includes the advert, job specification and application forms to download and complete: www.forestry.gov.uk/vacancies
