About oak buds
 

At this time of year the bark and twigs will aid recognition. There are 2 species (types) of native oak – Sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and Pedunculate or English oak (Quercus robur)

oak barkBark: pale grey and vertically fissured (cracked)

oak 
twig and budsTwigs: green/brown with pale buff spots (lenticels) or dark grey
Buds: orange/brown with many scales. Clusters of buds at the top of the twig are typical of oak
