2002 oak bud burst distribution

Oak bud burst occurs several weeks earlier now than 50 years ago. It is now used as an indicator for climate change. In 2002, you helped our scientists collect data on the timing of oak bud burst by recording the date you saw the first green shoots on a local oak tree.

The map shows all the reports we had. The first oak bud burst recorded last year was in Wales. We observed a spread northward through Wales and eastward through the south of England.
