What we do

Welcome to the Forestry Commission England What We Do pages.  Here we aim to tell you about our visions and ultimate goals. Find information on our vision for climate change, quality of life, business, the natural environment and how we can use trees, woods and forests as a sustainable resource.

Nine per cent of England (1 million hectares) is wooded – one of the lowest figures/percentages/proportions in Europe. Two-thirds of England’s woodland area is broadleaved, and over a third is historically and ecologically important ancient woodland.

England’s trees, woods and forests (ETWF) contribute at a range of scales, from individual street trees to networks of woodland in the countryside. They are a unique asset – rich in biodiversity, popular places for recreation and leisure, producers of products such as fuel and wood for use in our daily lives and are part of the solution to climate change. With good management they are also a sustainable resource – for our generation and for future generations.
