Fantastic forest trails

Beechenhurst is the starting point for the famous Sculpture Trail, there are additional waymarked walks of varying lengths beginning from the site.  For visitors bringing their own bikes to the forest, Beechenhurst is an ideal start point for the Family Cycle Trail.

Gruffalo Spotters at Beechenhurst Lodge

Follow clues and collect evidence as you search for the Gruffalo along the Gruffalo Spotters trail! Bring the characters to life before your eyes with The Gruffalo Spotter free app, or gather clues with an Evidence Kit. Our trail is open from 23rd Feb. More details about our trail

Stargazing at Beechenhurst Lodge

Experience stars in the night sky like never before when visiting Beechenhurst this winter. Download your beginner's guide to stargazing, then visit our family-friendly "Why stars matter" trail to bring the night sky to life and become a forest-star! The trail starts opposite the ramp access to the café.

Beechenhurst cafe

Beechenhurst cafe serves food from 8.30am everyday.  The menu encompasses locally sourced food with a variety of specials and childrens meals available.  Parties/meetings can be catered for, please contact the cafe on 01594 824662 or e-mail beechenhurstcafe@outlook.com   The cafe have free wi-fi and sell walking trail leaflets and Discovery Passes.

Adventure play

The main play area includes a zip wire, swings and fireman's pole and a mini picnic area. There is a separate toddler area for our younger visitors.  Please note that at this time of the year there may be delays on the play area opening due to allowing time for defrosting of the safety surface.

Tree Top Junior

This junior version of Go Ape is aimed at 6-12 year olds. The course can be found at the edge of the main car park and is open every weekend and during the school holidays.

The Climbing Tower

The climbing tower is an exciting way to let off steam! 36 routes from easy to extreme and 2 vertical abseils. Great for children and adults, friends, families and group bookings. Check the Forest of Dean Adventure website for opening times.  Archery sessions can also be booked.

Forest Learning

If you are interested in bringing a school or group to Beechenhurst there are options for self led visits (downloadable resources are available such as activities and lesson plans) or the chance to use a Forestry Commission approved learning provider Rachel Shilston

Families may wish to download our fun activity sheets for children to help get the most out of your visit.

Visited the sculpture trail for the first time, brilliant! However, what causes the yellow colour in one of the ditches? We were going up hill to The Echo and the stream next to the road was heavily stained yellow even though the water was clear. Thanks

Ed, 20/Jan/2017

Thank you! Great to hear you enjoyed your first visit. The coloured staining in this area is due to Iron Ore which appears naturally in the ground and can be found in other areas in the Forest of Dean.

Forestry Commission Response

Hi are dogs welcome here? Also is there any Christmas events taking place as looking for something different for my 7 and 9yr old.

Sarah Shepherd , 29/Nov/2016

Yes, we welcome well behaved dogs :-) We have a Christmas Trail you can follow with information about different trees along the way and why the species we all know and love as Christmas Trees are the best!
