West Tanpit Wood is a small, quiet woodland located on the banks of picturesque Markham Brook.
There is a short circular walk within the wood which passes through a mixture of trees including oak, hazel and larch.
West Tanpit Wood is probably named so because of the brook having been previously used for leather tanning. Oak was used to line tan pits into which brook water was fed, the oak bark leeched out tannins causing the animal hides to soften and become more durable.
