Our Autumn Top 10

With the forests bursting in colour as autumn unfolds, we've named our top ten places to visit this season. From the Japanese Maples leaves at Westonbirt Arboretum to the gold and copper colours of Delamere Forest, these routes are sure to 'colour you happy'.

1. Forest of Dean, Symonds Yat

Intro:
With spectacular views across the River Wye and the forest beyond, Symonds Yat Rock is a fabulous place to visit in autumn as the forest turns golden. This exciting loop walk not only takes in fantastic views, but also hidden waterfalls, a trip on a hand ferry and excellent spots to enjoy the autumn colour.

Please note that in autumn, the hand ferry may only be running at weekends and school holidays, so it's best to check ahead by calling the Saracens Head on 01600 890435.

Intro:
To see the glorious autumn colours that Grizedale offers, it’s worth putting in a little effort and getting to the highest point, Carron Crag. The 314m viewpoint is situated on the west side of the forest and takes you along a mixture of paths and surfaces to the trigpoint at the top. The views from this vantage point are breathtaking on a clear day, and offer a stunning panorama of the surrounding hills and fells softened by the warm autumn hues.

3. Westonbirt, Silk Wood Trail

Being home to over 15,000 trees from all around the globe, Westonbirt Arboretum has a truly unique and spectacular array of autumn colour! Take a trip along the Silk Wood trail to head up in to the trees to admire the autumn colour up close, and then through Silk Wood itself to witness the magnificent collection of Japanese maples.

Intro:
Delamere Forest is beautiful in the autumn. As you drive onto the site,
the larch trees on the Old Pale hillside produce a magnificent backdrop
of warm autumnal colour. Throughout the forest you will see a stunning
range of golden and copper hues of the oak, chestnut and beech trees.

Intro:
Bedgebury is a stunning place to visit at autumn, the fiery leaves and brilliant berries are in sharp contrast to the background of rich ever green conifers. Particularly striking are the Larch which turn a deep golden colour and the Dawn Redwood and Swamp Cypress with shades of red, chestnut, ochre and copper.

Hamsterley forest is a delightful 2,000 hectare oasis, sprawling along
the sides of a sheltered valley. It’s a lovely place to visit in autumn, with
beautiful colour from the moment you arrive along the forest drive.

Salcey’s ancient woodland is great to visit in autumn for the vivid colour
display of oak, ash and hazel trees. Spend an afternoon exploring the ancient wood and take a moment to admire the view from the Tree Top Way, getting a bird’s eye perspective of the fabulous autumnal forest colour.

Intro:
Wyre is one of the largest ancient oak woodlands in England making it one of the best places to visit in autumn as the trees offer up vivid colour displays of burnished golds, yellows and oranges. Take a stroll past majestic old Oaks, along forest tracks and narrow paths, and through the Wyre Arboretum as you admire the autumn colour around you.

Intro:
Alice Holt’s Habitat trail takes you along a path filled with an array of autumn colour. It’s particularly beautiful in autumn because of its collection of native trees, such as oak, beech and rowan. These trees turn a stunning, rich orange, red and yellow at this time of year.

Intro:
The New Forest’s ancient and ornamental woodlands are some of the best places in the country to see autumn, with Beech, Sweet Chestnut and Oak often showing truly magical displays. The Tall Trees trail is one of the best places to experience the array of colours in the New Forest. Take a stroll around the peaceful surroundings while marvelling at the vivid display of autumn colour.
