Easy Access Discovery Trail Opening Event
On Wednesday 5th October at 10.30am Tony Reid, Chief Executive of the Treloar Trust, opened the improved Easy Access Discovery Trail here at Alice Holt Forest. With the help of Treloars and funding from the South Downs National Park, Binsted Parish Council and the Hampshire Playing Fields Association, improvements have been made which have resulted in the creation of a very special accessible activity trail.
The trail surface has been improved, low rails have been installed in places to assist people with impaired sight and a special den 'skeleton' has been built to enable wheelchair users to build a den and enjoy going inside it. These make the trail more accessible physically but what makes this trail unique is the booklet, entitled 'Talking Pictures', which has been developed by a speech and language specialist from Treloars. 'Talking Pictures' employs symbols used in daily life by people with speech and language difficulties and enables them to take part fully in the activities along the trail.
The 'Talking Pictures' booklets and Discovery Packs are available at the cafe and the forest office. Discovery Packs contain additional resources to use along the trail to make it even more interesting and help users to discover more for themselves. A trail leaflet is also available from car park dispensers and at the cafe.
The trail is not just a children's trail and we hope that it will prove popular with people of all ages and abilities. For more information please ring 01483 326264.
