Woodland Management for Birds: a guide to managing woodland for priority birds in Wales

WILLOW WARBLER.A significant number of woodland bird species have been in decline in Wales, along with other parts of the UK, in recent decades.  With the population of several species having reduced by more  than 50% since the mid 1980s.

The health of bird populations is considered as a good indicator of the quality of the environment and the Welsh Assembly Government uses this as a measure in Wales.

Woodland management is a factor in providing for the requirements of woodland birds and other wildlife.

Forestry Commission Wales and the RSPB with the support of the Countryside Council for Wales have produced a new guide on managing woodland for priority birds in Wales.

It explains the importance of habitat features for birds and provides advice on planning and managing woodland as well as describing the requirements of each of the priority woodland birds identified.
