Yorkshire and The Humber Woodland Bird Project

Reversing the decline in woodland bird species in Yorkshire and The Humber.

  • Woodland bird populations have been in steady decline since the 1970’s with 33 species falling by 20% over the last 25 years.  South Yorkshire forms part of a national hotspot for remnant populations of Woodland Birds.
  • Wild birds are considered as a good indicator of the general state of the health of the wider environment.
  • The reasons for this decline are many but changes in woodland structure from long-term undermanagement are thought to be a key factor.

Together with the RSPB,The Woodland Birds Project is aiming to reverse this decline by providing financial support to landowners and managers to improve woodland habitat for birds.  These new and innovative grants include the Woodland Birds WIG80 which funds 80% of the cost of eligible operations, and the Reversing Woodland Bird Decline Additional Contribution for woodland creation.
