Forestry Commission Wales (FCW) is committed to promoting the use of wood as an economical, sustainable and carbon-neutral fuel.
As more people in Wales turn to wood as a form of fuel, we are changing the way we sell firewood in order to respond to the growing demand in the most appropriate way.
We want to support the development of a firewood supply chain in Wales which delivers a quality firewood product, and also supports community enterprises. Our aim is to develop a network of local firewood merchants and community enterprises who are willing to collect timber from the forest roadside for processing into domestic firewood.

Recent changes in the way we sell firewood
Until now, we have been able to respond to individual requests for remnant logs on an ad hoc basis, with perhaps 50 such sales per year. The great majority of these have been sales of roadside timber. "Scavenging" firewood has never been widespread practice in Wales.
As demand for firewood grows, it has become increasingly difficult for us to meet individual expectations. Firewood supply also represents a business opportunity that could help to generate employment in this difficult economic period. It is against this background that we have concluded that we need to move away from selling wood to individuals and instead support the development of local suppliers to meet demand. We believe this is the best way to get more firewood to more people, and to support the local economy. We will publish the names of these merchants on our website so that anyone wishing to purchase locally sourced, sustainable firewood from Woodlands will be able to contact them easily.
FCW would be happy to consider proposals from community enterprises looking to use this valuable resource to create employment and generate fuel from the woodlands close to where they live.
There are many examples of projects where we have worked closely with communities all over Wales.
