The Baja GB 2007 Rally

Background/context

Welsh forests are a world class location for a range of outdoor activities, not least the annual high profile Wales Rally GB, bringing welcome business to accommodation and hospitality providers, especially in rural areas. Such is the excellent reputation of Wales for hosting fantastic motoring events that this year sees Britain’s first ever round of the FIA International Cup for Cross Country Bajas, being held in the forests of mid Wales.

Description/why

"We are thrilled to be hosting the Baja GB 2007 Rally. Accommodating any motor sport activity is a monumental logistical challenge, with public safety paramount. As ever, FC Wales staff have been working closely with event organisers to ensure that the motor sport activities dovetail with the demands of other forest users - mountain bikers, walkers and local communities. Once this motor sport activity is over, our civil engineering and forest teams will ensure that the forests revert to their everyday uses.

This year’s Baja GB has the full backing of the Welsh Assembly Motor sport Initiative, the Motor Sports Association and FC Wales. With a huge investment of £100,000 to improve forestry roads and upgrade tracks, the Baja Rally will benefit from a superb 55km special stage through the heart of the upper reaches of the Wye Valley as well as a near-60km special stage through the mid-Wales forest of Hafren.

Organisers have already received enquiries from as far afield as Dubai, Russia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany and France! FIA, the sport’s governing body, will be sending officials from Finland, Jordan, Bahrain and France to assess Britain’s first ever FIA-status Baja event.

Future projects

"The Baja Rally promises to be a great event and offer future potential for other motor sport events in mid Wales. As well as rallies, Wales’s woodlands host many other top class, outdoor recreation pursuits including mountain biking and orienteering, with the potential for further development of other ‘adventure’ sports."
