Brecon Beacons National Park
Background/context
Situated in mid Wales and covering some 520 square miles, the Brecon Beacons National Park offers a wide variety of beautiful countryside and recreational facilities and is a valuable boost for local tourism. The landscape of the Park is dominated by open hills and mountains but there is more to this remarkable place than the high peaks. The lowland areas are equally exceptional and include hidden waterfalls, rolling farmland, meandering rivers and wooded areas. This amazing landscape has now been officially recognised as the first National Park in the UK to be awarded Geopark status for the Fforest Fawr Geopark. Description "The quality of the visitor experience at the Brecon Beacons National Park is not only due to the sheer beauty of the place but the way in which we harness the natural surroundings to make them accessible and user-friendly. We work together, in partnership with the National Park Authority and the other land owners, to manage the countryside to the benefit of our visitors. Some 10,000 hectares of the Park is Forestry Commission Wales managed woodlands and our local area manager works closely with the Park Rangers to develop new walks, paths and trails to make the best use of the forest landscape for all kinds of recreational activities. We are also involved with the Park Authority in improving the educational value of this fantastic landscape. Not only do our Education Officers work with local schools to make best use of this natural learning environment but our visitor centre at Garwnant, which sits at the gateway to the Park, is a hub for schools and families to learn more about the woodlands, forests and associated wildlife to be found in the Brecon Beacons. Our work also extends to supporting the more strategic work of the Park Authority to ensure that our design plans for the forestry and woodland areas fits in with the overall plans for the Park. Our Director for Forestry Commission Wales also sits on the committee for the Fforest Fawr Geopark." Future projects "This year sees the 50th Anniversary of the Brecon Beacons National Park and we will continue to work with the Park Authority and our partners to ensure that every visitor enjoys and benefits from their experience and looks forward to returning."
