John Wingfield

Sketch for John Wingfield's sculpture

I have been working with chainsaws for 12 years as a tree surgeon and instructor/ assessor within the arboricultural industry. About six years ago I started using my chainsaw to make things - chairs, sculptures etc. I took a course which gave me all the information and techniques I lacked at the time. I am a bit of a perfectionist and like spending a long time on one item rather than making lots of smaller, rougher items.

Design for Sculptree 2007

The inspiration for my carving is based on a form that I have studied and know how to translate into a large sculpture from previous work carving giant snail shells. The flute of water emerging from the opening of the shell and splashing onto water is inspired from my grandfather's work as an illustrator for ladybird books and in particular some sketches I have of his. The sculpture will also incorporate areas which can he used for seating which will make the sculpture practical.
