Sketch for Nansi Hemming's sculpture

Born and raised in west Wales I started carving love spoons in my father's workshop aged 21. Woodcarving has been the centre of my life ever since. I started carving large sculptures 15 years ago when I met a chainsaw carver at a festival and was inspired to have a go.

Design for Sculptree 2007: The World Held Safe

In Welsh love spoon carving the ball in a cage traditionally symbolises the seed or love held safe for the future. Drawing on this idea, in this design the cage is in the shape of a precious stone with the ball in the centre symbolising the world held safe for our children.
