Butterflies in the Forests of Northeast England

Dark Green Fritillary. Restricted - Forestry Commission web use only

A visit to the forests of NE England during the spring and summer months offers the chance to see several attractive and important butterflies. These include the small-pearl-bordered fritillary, fond of wet grassy woodland glades and open areas and the large heath butterfly (pictured right), associated with upland areas such as those found in Kielder Forest and Harbottle.

In Co Durham, Hamsterley forest has been gradually attracting new species of butterfly as the woodland ages and the dark green fritillary (below right) is one of the numerous butterflies now seen in the network of woodland rides.

Also look out for peacock, small tortoiseshell and green-veined white butterflies which can be seen throughout the NE forests. For further information visit the Butterfly Conservation website.
