Swansea Community Woodlands Initiative, Swansea

This is an initiative to enhance a network of woods in Swansea to meet needs for community recreation, health & well-being, learning, enterprise and biodiversity. The project will include bringing existing woodlands into positive, sustainable management and the planting of new areas of woodland.

A key aim is to provide equity of access to woodlands across Swansea, and to promote the positive use and enjoyment of these sites. The project will support a number of existing community regeneration and community’s first strategies and help to implement the Local Biodiversity Action Plan priorities for woodland habitats and species.

Specific work will include surveys and evaluation, preparation of management plans, access improvements, habitat and species management, woodland creation, woodland art and craft, interpretation and awareness raising events and activities. The project will be a joint venture between The Environment Centre, local community organisations, the City and County of Swansea, The Swansea Biodiversity Partnership and The Swansea Environment Education Forum, which includes representation from over 20 community organisations.

The local community will be engaged in all aspects of this work and a volunteer warden scheme will be established. Building on a pilot project in Bishop’s wood, support would be provided for others who deliver training in traditional woodcraft skills and for small-scale woodland craft industries. The project will include the development of a centre of excellence demonstrating best practice in community woodland management, learning and enterprise.
