As a disabled persons, high lodge isn't yet completely accessible from my experience. There is disabled parking with pathing which is good, and a sized cafe (no electric door) and disabled toilets -ground floor. There are several open pathways for a short rounded walk, but there seemed no pathed forest trail. The one mile trail was a dirt track, perhaps ok for mobility scooters but not for wheelchairs, at least not in winter. Hopefully money can be invested into making the forest accessible. Otherwise I did love the surrounding forest.

Thank you for your feedback which is always appreciated. We are currently in the process of submitting a Heritage Lottery Fund bid for an all ability Heritage Trail at High Lodge. This will improve our trail offer for those customers in wheelchairs although the bid will need to follow due process. High Lodge Information Point will be pleased to provide assistance, when requested.

Forestry Commission Response

I came to high lodge with my 2 daughter-in-laws and 3 grandchildren. We had a wonderful time. I do agree with a previous comment about the gruffalo trail being away from the actual gruffalo itself!! And I think it would also be a good idea to have actual animals to find with the clues?? The children absolutely loved it. We will be back

We came on the 30th October to join our daughter, husband and 2 yr old grand daughter with the express purpose of following the Gruffalo trail. Well signed for most of the trail and not too long between the musical instruments so it kept the little one amused however. We could see the Gruffalo from the start of the trail quite clearly but in the distance, fortunately she didn't notice. We found a circular plastic disc with the photo of the 'mouse' face down in the leaves, we replaced it but it had obviously been torn down. Now that was the last animal we found, yes there were log piles and wigwams of wood but no animals. Also whilst most of the markers where fine a few were missing and the final one did NOT lead us to the Gruffalo, the adults had to go on a final search to find it, the final sign left us at least 50m from the statue.

The statue itself was superb, congratulations, but there can be no excuse for not maintaining the trail. Goodness knows what it will be like when it is in this state after so short a time.

Jim Hough, 2/Nov/2014

Thank you for your feedback and apologies that you found the trail in this condition. We do monitor the trail on a regular basis but unfortunately there is regular damage to the signs so constant upkeep is required.
