Forest Schools

A group of school boys learning a variety of skills at a forest schoolA concept that originated in Denmark, Forest Schools is an innovative educational concept that aims to encourage and inspire individuals through positive experiences and participation in engaging and motivating activities in a woodland environment. This approach has been shown to develop personal, social and emotional skills in children of all ages. Over an extended period of time, groups would visit a woodland site on a regular basis, learning about the natural environment, how to handle risks, undertake problem solving and co-operate with others. Each visit builds on previous experiences, helping to develop a sense of greater independence, confidence and increased self-esteem.

Forest Schools in the Northeast of England are growing. At the start of 2006, only a handful of qualified instructors were delivering this service. However, the potential they present for the mainstream education system has led to the Forest Education Initiative Northeast Cluster Group to start compiling a database of qualified instructors and locations where Forest Schools can be undertaken.
