Maerdy New Community Woodland, Maerdy, R.C.T

Description - The Maerdy Colliery site lies to the north of the main village and has long been used as an informal recreational site since the mines closed. The land is largely made up of colliery spoil and waste ground, which has seen some reclamation planting which has been largely unsuccessful. We will replant some of these sections along with planting several new areas of woodland on the colliery site.

Access to the site is very informal at present, part of the project will be to improve some of the existing tracks to an all ability access standard. There will also be works to enhance the major access points to provide more attractive entrance features while incorporating barriers to deter inappropriate access onto the site. Within the site the provision of rest areas will be set at strategic locations so that the best views of the site can be enjoyed.

Grant awarded: £248,700
