North Gower Woodlands Project, Swansea

Description - The North Gower Woodlands Project is a joint venture between the Llanrhidian Community Hall Trust Limited, The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales and the City and County of Swansea.  The project will bring together several existing woodlands in rural north Gower under a unified management and development programme to enhance visitor access and experience and to develop their local economic potential.  It will also create a new community woodland in semi-rural Penclawdd. The project will improve the condition and help ensure the long-term survival of five of North Gower’s existing  woodlands in the ownership of the Wildlife Trust plus, potentially, several other existing woodlands currently in private ownership through lease/management agreements and it will create a new community woodland on publicly owned land in Penclawdd.

Work will be undertaken to improve existing and create new access facilities to and within the woodlands including provision for those with disabilities.  New woodland-related recreational and interpretational facilities that are attractive both to local inhabitants and visitors, particularly families will be provided.

The project will create opportunities for people, especially children, who do not normally have ready access to the countryside to learn about and connect with a biodiverse rural environment and provide opportunities for the health-beneficial use and enjoyment of the woodlands for individuals, groups and families.  The woodlands will be linked with established walking and cycle trails (e.g. the North Gower Cycle Trail) and public transport to maximise access and recreational opportunities.
