We plan to create a community woodland and trail that will greatly improve our community by providing a wooded open space for social gatherings and physical recreation. The project will be fully accessible and useable both by the school for informal and formal activities and forest school type initiatives and for the whole village to provide a community focus. Further tree planting will be undertaken around the site to generally increase biodiversity and learning opportunities.
The trail will embrace an existing pond that the community successfully developed some time ago and develop further a meadowland area. The community feels that by including recreational features such as seating and a picnic area, we can facilitate greater social integration in our village. The project would also aim to extend our activities with the teenage community beyond their involvement in the development and management of the project by working with the community council to find them a nearby site and funding for a skateboard half pipe.
Our community is semi-rural and scattered over some 4kms. Community meetings are held at the school and adjacent community hall, currently the only focal point for the area. The village library, swimming pool and possibly soon a medical centre are on the same site. We will involve many people in this project, both during and after its construction to improve the social integration of the village, with particular emphasis on youth participation.
