Fedwr Hir Woodland Project

Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda CynonTaff plans to utilise and expand the area of woodland surrounding their offices to provide experience in woodland management and conservation for the many community groups and volunteers they work with. Volunteers come from all parts of RCT and Merthyr and are of various abilities, including individuals both young and old, disadvantaged young adults, school projects, disabled access projects and general community groups.

By improving the existing woodland environment, and delivering the project with volunteers as a woodland creation and management training programme, it is hoped that volunteers will reap significant benefits in terms of skills gained and enhanced employment opportunities. Project activities will include developing a woodland nursery, tree care, woodland creation, woodland management and conservation and the construction of a small Dutch barn for woodmilling and training activities. The woodland will also be developed as a working environment for greenwood activities such as hurdle and chair making, stool and pole lathing, to further enhance employment opportunities for volunteers.
