Education and Learning in the Forest of Dean – 2009

Light falling onto an open area of woodlandThe Forest of Dean, with its rich mosaic of broadleaved and coniferous woodland, attractive visitor facilities and miles and miles of tracks and trails is an ideal destination for school and other groups wishing to learn about the environment, carry out fieldwork, participate in teambuilding activities or simply visit for a walk.

The Forest of Dean is located in Gloucestershire between the Rivers Severn and Wye – about an hour’s drive from Bristol and Cheltenham, 45 minutes from Hereford and just 30 minutes from Gloucester.

The Forestry Commission offers a wide range of exciting activities for schools and other groups who are visiting the Forest. Ranger-led activities are designed to complement the National Curriculum and can be adapted to fit into any topic or subject.

Most Ranger-led activities take place at Beechenhurst Lodge.  However, activities can be adapted to take place at other Forestry Commission sites or in school grounds.

Activities are available all year and each season provides different opportunities. Spring is a great time to visit the forest - with dark mornings and evenings, getting out of the classroom during the day brings a breath of fresh air. During the long hot days of the summer term, the trees provide welcome shade, while autumn term visits on crisp bright days show the forest in all its colourful glory.
