As well as walking, cycling and horse-riding there are a number of other activities that people enjoy at the forest, be it fishing or kite flying.
Fishing
The fishing season in the forest runs between 16 June and 14 March, and there are two locations where those with permits can participate - Hatchet Pond and Janesmoor Pond (under 17s only). Fishing is no longer available for Under 17s at Janesmoor Pond as the water level has dropped too low. Please keep an eye on this site for updates of when it will re-open. Season tickets can be obtained from the Forestry Commission at the Queen's House, Lyndhurst. Daily and weekly permits can be obtained from various places across the forest. Kite Flying
Small kites under 2m² may be flown on the forest but be considerate to other visitors and forest wildlife. Kites can frighten animals so keep well away from livestock and horse riders. Power and traction kites over 2m², kite buggies and wheel boards are not permitted on the forest. The South East Kiting Association have more information available on their website.
Barbecues
There are purpose built barbecue facilities in two areas of the forest - Anderwood and Wilverley To book these facilities, contact the Forestry Commisson on 023 8028 6838. There are also metal plates fixed to picnic tables provided for disposable barbecues in the Bolderwood and Blackwater car parks.
Raised, non-disposable barbecues can be used at the following - Anderwood, Blackwater, Bolderwood, Hatchet Pond, Linford Bottom, Whitefield Moor, Wilverley Plain and Wilverley Inclosure. Remember that barbecues can start fires so please ensure they are always used safely and only in the gravelled area of the car parks.
Ensure that barbecue waste is cold after use and dispose of it safely. Take it home or put the cold waste in a bin. Be careful not to start a fire. To find out today's fire risk please click here.
Educational Visits
The Forestry Commission ranger team are able to provide walks, talks and activities about the history, wildlife and management of the New Forest, as well as offering school visits for infants, primary, secondary and college groups.
Other Activities
Some people fly model aeroplanes in the forest, and those interested can participate at Beaulieu Heath.
