Drop in session July 28th 2004

What do you most value about the area as it is now and why?

  • The ability to walk from forest to the shore – not to a dune
  • Even felling 20% of our forest reduces its vitality/integrity/value. For what gain?
  • Rwy’n gwerthfawrogi’r cysgod mae’r goedwig y roi i’r rhan yma o’r ynys
  • I value the shelter provided by the trees for this part of Anglesey
  • Gwerthfawrogi coed o ran iechyd – cynhychu ocsigen.
  • We value trees from a health point of view – produces oxygen.
  • Anglesey has the lowest woodland cover in Europe i.e. approx. 3%. This forest alone provides open and easy access on Anglesey.
  • There is shade near the beach so that people spending the day at the beach can shelter from the sun. The trees also mask view of the car park from the beach. Removing trees from the beachline would reduce both benefits.
  • Residents car park at Llanddwyn for older residents’ access (people who cannot walk far)
  • We value the forest for the protection from Atlantic gales – and also for wildlife habitat. If protecting the dunes means parts of the forest can be kept for recreation facilities that is all for the good!!
  • Change for change’s sake, inconclusive justification for it. I have photos of the area before the trees, it was like a desert, very bare
  • I love the birds in the forest, woodpeckers, chiffchaffs, ravens, etc.
  • The protection from the wind in the forest
  • The walks and trails are more enjoyable in the forest
  • Dogs have to be on leads on the dunes
  • The areas under the thinned trees are beautiful
  • Please leave the forest as it is – hundreds of us love it
  • Walk from car park (public) to Llanddwyn in the trees. This gives a mediterrannean feel rather than walking along a beach

What, if anything would you like to see improved or changed?

  • More deciduous trees but keep area of trees the same. Forest walks are preferred to the dune walks
  • KEEP AREA 2 WOODED, it can be thinned but don’t cut the forest trees all down.
  • Bare felled areas in the forest are unsightly, few flowers or birds, etc.
  • We would like to see a mixture of hard and soft wood and that deciduous trees are planted
  • Manage it better for BAP species like red squirrels
  • Not enough supervision on the beach (dogs fouling), people dropping litter etc

Any other comments you would like to make about the area and potential changes to the area?

  • More bird and red squirrel houses
  • More maps and information boards and benches
  • Can you really deny that you won’t receive EU grants for this project?
  • If everything is on hold why are you cutting silver birch trees within an open area of the forest?
  • The Forestry Commission should repair the paths which have been churned up by machinery during the felling during this winter/spring in zone 2
  • When will there be official confirmation that the Newborough WEBS incinerator scheme has been cancelled. In the absence of this there should be immediate communication with owners of the land where it was suggested that the incinerators be cited to allay their fears & give them information
  • Do away with all the trees, put it back as it was wild and precious place
  • No – too drastic
  • Keep the trees, plant lots of deciduous trees. We have lots of dunes already
  • More historical photos to show past changes in the dunes 1940s to today
  • If there could be any toilets
  • If there can be a bin there
  • Make the forest into a red squirrel reserve for Anglesey – North Wales – as a central theme – incorporating the recreational activities such as walking and the other conservation remits, flora and fauna included
  • Mi hoffwn weld cynrychiolydd lleol ar bwyllgor sy’n gwneud penderfyniadau ynglyn a’r safle/ cynllun
  • (I would like to see local representation on the group that makes decisions about the site/projects
  • More independent reps as well
  • Tyda ni ddim isio gweld llosgydd coed yma oherwydd ei fod yr fygythiad i iechyd a tyda ni ddim isio byw gyda’rddrewdod.
  • We do not want to see a wood burner here because it could be damaging to health and we don’t want to live with the bad smell
  • Any changes should be made with great care and responsibility and not make rash assumptions about how Nature will behave. These proposals have been hastily put together
  • There are plenty of dunes at present and there are a danger to children due to
    • Paeodophiles
    • Being buried by sand
