The Land Information Search (LIS) is a map-based tool that allows you to search for details about a chosen area of land. It highlights where features such as Special Protection Areas or Woodland Grant Schemes are already in place.
Applicants for grants and licences must take this information into account when applying. Please note that Forestry Commission Scotland cannot accept a printed copy of a LIS map as part of a grant scheme or felling licence application.
- Please check the minimum requirements for running the Land Information Search.
Types of Land Information Search:
Basic Search
The basic search lets you check a circular area of up to 1000 hectares around a chosen starting location on a map. You can choose your start point by town or place name, postcode or grid reference.
Advanced Search
The advanced search allows you to choose a starting location on a map and then draw a specific area ‘shape’ on the map for searching. This gives a more accurate representation of the area of interest than the basic search.
The document How to run a Land Information Search (PDF 855k) has full instructions for advanced searching. (You will need a PDF readersuch as Adobe Acrobat to view the document.) There is also a help function available in the search.
Some points to note about using the Land Information Search
- Both searches use the same list of land designations and features to provide results.
- The main difference between the two options is that the advanced search gives control over the shape of area that can be searched.
- For properties that cross borders you will need to perform separate searches on the relevant area, choosing starting points in the respective countries.
- If you have questions about any features or special areas highlighted by the LIS report, you should contact the organisations responsible for those designations. They will give advice about the management and care of such features.
Minimum requirements for running the Land Information Search
In accordance with government guidelines to serve the largest possible online audience, the LIS has been developed to operate using Microsoft Windows 98 or newer (Windows 2000, ME, XP, Vista).
The supported Web Browsers are currently Internet Explorer 6.0 or 7.0 running on one of the aforementioned operating systems. Internet Explorer version 8.0 has a "compatibility mode" option which should allow users to access the Land Information Search.
'Pop-ups'
The search site makes use of pop-up windows to display the report. Please ensure that your internet browser does not block pop ups.
