UK biodiversity action plan

The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UKBAP) sets out the government's broad strategy for conserving biodiversity over the next 20 years. The UKBAP includes measures to promote biodiversity conservation in all our woodlands. It also contains UK wide Habitat and Species Action Plans for conservation.

Several native woodland types are priority habitats and many priority species are present in woodlands. The government have asked the Forestry Commission (FC) to work with other organisations, local communities and individual people to make the action plans work.

The UKBAP is encouraging local people to get more interested in their natural environment and to look after their wildlife and natural habitats by helping to prepare and carry out Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs).

A series of Biodiversity Briefing Notes provide background on the UKBAP process and its relevance to forestry, and describes how the FC is contributing. The Notes are primarily aimed at FC staff, foresters and woodland managers and the staff of partner organisations. The information may be of wider interest to people who are involved with any aspect of biodiversity action plans, and to the public. The current set of Notes is not intended to be complete; additions and revisions will be made as the UKBAP process develops. The Notes and future updates will be available here.
