Why do leaves change colour?

Weather for best autumn colour

Autumn colours are influenced by the weather due to the effect different conditions have on the chemicals in the leaves:

  • During spring a wet growing season is best.
  • From summer into early autumn, sunny days and cool nights are desirable.
  • During autumn, calm days prolong viewing opportunities. Gusty winds and hard rains can cause leaves to fall before their full colour potential is reached.
