About Lael Forest Garden
Forestry Commission Scotland have created a network of paths in this attractive 6 hectare woodland which is dominated by some 200 varieties of common and unusual shrubs and specimen trees.
The Forestry Commission acquired the land at Lael in 1929, and set aside the Forest Garden in 1933 because of the many interesting and ornamental trees species it already contained, thanks to the foresight of the previous owners.
Forestry Commission Scotland have continued to add to the collection over the years. It is rightly included in the small number of arboreta which the Commission maintains throughout Britain.
The trees here include the British "Champion" specimens of Delavay's Silver Fir and Forrest's Fir, and also the most northerly specimen of Italian Cypress in the UK.
