Birchwood Trail

(Average user rating: unrated unrated)

About Birchwood Trail

From the picnic site the route climbs through a birch woodland which has recently been reclaimed from rhododendron. Enjoy the views of the Clyde as you head up hill. The return to the car park takes you through conifer forest and past crags known locally as the ‘Lovers Leap’.

The road winds below wooded slopes to the village of Ardentinny, which sits in a south-facing bay. Across the River Finart, the Forestry Commission has provided a car park by the splendid sandy beach, facing south-east down Loch Long. This is a good spot for watching waders at low tide.

See also our pages on forests around Dunoon.

How to get there:

Birchwood Trail can be started from Ardentinny Car park in Ardentinny and Glenfinnart which is part of Argyll Forest Park. Dunoon is the nearest town or village.

There are two equally appealing approaches to Ardentinny.

Take the car ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, and follow the A815 then the A880.

Alternately, take the A82 from Glasgow along the western shore of Loch Lomond through Tarbet, entering the Park at Arrochar, follow the A815 at Cairndow, then take the A880 to Ardentinny.
