Old Railway Footpath

(Average user rating: unrated unrated)
This trail is perfect for the less ambitious walker looking for a gentle stroll on well-surfaced tracks with very few hills. The most prominent feature of this walk is the old railway line, that used to carry coal from Chopwell and High Spen collieries to Derwenthaugh cokeworks. A restored example of the railway trucks can be found where the forest road joins the railway line.

How to get there:

Old Railway Footpath can be started from Chopwell Wood Main Car Park in Chopwell Woodland Park. High Spen, Chopwell, Rowlands Gill, Gateshead, and Newcastle are the nearest towns or villages.

600 metres along road into the wood, the car park is situated on the left.
