Silurian Way

This trail is named after the geological time period in which the forests characteristic grey slate and shale rocks were formed. The Silurian Way takes you down one side of the Grizedale Valley and back up the other. On the way you will pass many of the 80 sculptures which are scattered throughout the forest.

How to get there:

Silurian Way can be started from Grizedale Visitor Centre in Grizedale Forest Park. Hawkshead is the nearest town or village.

By Road:

From the North (unsuitable for coaches):

A591 to Ambleside, leave Ambleside A593 to Langdale/Coniston. First left B5286 to Hawkshead. Bypass Hawkshead follow B5286 south then first right at tourist sign "Theatre in the Forest", follow to Grizedale approx 2 miles.

From the South and all coaches:

M6 junction 36 take A591 first exit A590, Barrow follow A590 past Newby Bridge Havethwaite Crossroads, right turn, tourist sign "Grizedale Forest Park", follow signs for Satterthwaite/Grizedale north.

By Rail:

Grange over sands to the south and then bus or taxi. Windermere to the east then bus or taxi.

Lovely sunny day on last trip round, excellent if easy walk, nice views..and with all the other tracks intercepting the silurian way track it was easy enough to make the route shorter should we have felt the need too.

Really enjoyed our walk, think the dog loved it more! Cant wait to come back! Loved the fact you could join different routes to make your own. Staff were really helpful.

Again a great walk,most enjoyable, some carvings vandalised it seems ,shame, will be back many times
